Week One

I pace the dirt road next to the hole. My hands are shoved inside my pockets because I kept inadvertently curving my fingers toward my palm, making fists without even realizing it. I thought keeping my hands in my pockets would get them to relax, but instead, I’m just making fists in my pockets. I try not to be, but I’m mad at Adley before I even see his figure walking toward me across his great big expanse of lawn. It’ll still take him another ten minutes before he gets here. What the fuck took him so long?

I shake my hands out, reminding myself that we’re all in this together. It’s always been that way, but shit. Noah’s been by his sister’s bed for a week after she went downhill. He’s retreating. Adley’s been too quiet. The kind of quiet that reminds me of how he can slip into a superior air that makes me want to cold cock him. What the fuck are these two doing to me?

We need Macie.

It’s feeling like before, I remind myself. At that, I jam my hands through my hair as soon as the thought ricochets through me. I shake my head. I don’t want it to be like before. Adley was talking about school, about how he’s going off to Duke and leaving us behind. Noah and I, quiet with jealousy, sat there as he talked about his classes and schedule and whether or not he was going to pledge a fraternity. Noah was jealous because he could have been right there with him. He could have been rooming with Adley because of his brains, but no. He’s needed here now.

Me? I was always going to stay here. I knew it. They knew it. Why did we never talk about it? It was as if graduation was the only thing that mattered. We got through that together and then the dawning realization hit. We were different. All of us. No matter how much we tried to tie ourselves together, it could never work. Adley began to speak as if silver coins fell from his mouth. Noah started to pull away and hover under a dark cloud. I watched it all from afar, almost like I was removed from it. Almost like I never belonged with them at all. I saw it play out like a movie I paid ten dollars to see but had to skip the drink and popcorn because I couldn’t afford to truly enjoy it.

I was happy about where my life was headed. I was happy to get out of my mom’s house. Happy to start work. I never talked about what an opportunity I thought Jonesy was giving me to the guys. I only talked about it with Macie, and she got it. She understood it all. She understood that what I had planned for my future screamed freedom.

The only bad thing about it was that it didn’t involve my two best friends.
